Preprint Study Suggests Arab Populations Are Underrepresented in the Pangenome

A recently released preprint entitled Arab Pangenome Reference (Draft) discusses the lack of reference genomes for Arab populations and the ways it has limited the investigation of genetic diversity and the genetic underpinning of numerous diseases.

The study provides a valuable resource for future genetic research and genomic medicine initiatives in the Arab populations, and will enable the probing of disease associations with variants and sequences that are unique or prevalent in Arab populations.

Many of such initiatives have been led by researchers from UAE and several other countries developing both nuclear and mitochondrial pangenome constructs from long-read data generated by sequencing technologies like PacBio’s Hi-Fi, which “provides the base with highly accurate long-reads”.
