This is a 3-Day course that is designed teach students about the concepts and techniques in Microbial data analysis.  The trainees will be introduced to the following topics during this course:

  • Next Generation Sequencing technologies – History, principle, workflow and NGS concepts
  • DNA and RNA sequencing applications
  • Overview of Global microbiome projects and their relevance
  • Metagenome and Metatranscriptome applications – Bacterial, Viral and Clinical
  • 16S and Shotgun Metagenomics experimental procedures – Design, Sampling, Wet lab Workflow and Quality Control
  • Illumina Sequencing by Synthesis Technology
  • NGS file formats and data quality control
  • Introduction to Illumina basespace apps
  • Overview of 16S and Shotgun metagenomics data analysis pipelines and metagenomics measures – alpha diversity, beta diversity, and ordination methods

Upon completion of this course, the participants will acquire a better understanding and appreciation of the following:

  • Different DNA sequencing technologies
  • Advantages and limitations of each sequencing platform
  • Different DNA and RNA sequencing technologies and where each one is applicable
  • The impact of wet lab techniques on metagenome data outcomes
  • Sequencing glossary: Coverage, read length, and read accuracy
  • Metagenome measures: alpha- and beta-diversity, principal co-ordinate analysis
  • Data visualization tools

Upon completion of the course, trainees will be able to perform the following:

  • Identify most suited sequencing platform and application type to answer their research question
  • Design their own metagenomics / metatranscriptomics project
  • Distinguish when to use 16S or Shotgun metagenomics, or metatranscriptomics
  • Assess sequencing data quality
  • Upload, Analyze, Visualize and Interpret 16S and Shotgun Metagenomic sequencing data

This course is suitable for:

  • Scientists, Researchers, Post Doc, PhD students, post graduates, under graduates students and laboratory technicians familiar with Genomics willing to master their knowledge and hands-on skills in Targeted Sequencing and SBS technology.
