This is a 3-Day course that is designed teach students about the concepts and techniques in Microbial data analysis. The trainees will be introduced to the following topics during this course:
- Next Generation Sequencing technologies – History, principle, workflow and NGS concepts
- DNA and RNA sequencing applications
- Overview of Global microbiome projects and their relevance
- Metagenome and Metatranscriptome applications – Bacterial, Viral and Clinical
- 16S and Shotgun Metagenomics experimental procedures – Design, Sampling, Wet lab Workflow and Quality Control
- Illumina Sequencing by Synthesis Technology
- NGS file formats and data quality control
- Introduction to Illumina basespace apps
- Overview of 16S and Shotgun metagenomics data analysis pipelines and metagenomics measures – alpha diversity, beta diversity, and ordination methods
Upon completion of this course, the participants will acquire a better understanding and appreciation of the following:
- Different DNA sequencing technologies
- Advantages and limitations of each sequencing platform
- Different DNA and RNA sequencing technologies and where each one is applicable
- The impact of wet lab techniques on metagenome data outcomes
- Sequencing glossary: Coverage, read length, and read accuracy
- Metagenome measures: alpha- and beta-diversity, principal co-ordinate analysis
- Data visualization tools
Upon completion of the course, trainees will be able to perform the following:
- Identify most suited sequencing platform and application type to answer their research question
- Design their own metagenomics / metatranscriptomics project
- Distinguish when to use 16S or Shotgun metagenomics, or metatranscriptomics
- Assess sequencing data quality
- Upload, Analyze, Visualize and Interpret 16S and Shotgun Metagenomic sequencing data
