AGBL LABS™ hosts Life Sciences Career Options course for High School Students

AGBL LABS™ were delighted to host their very first “Life Sciences Career Options” course in their venue at Dubai Science Park, which took place on Tuesday 28th of November 2017 for a bright group of year 12 (A-level) students of Sunmarke School Dubai.

This course is considered to be the first of its kind in the region. It comes as one of the “A Day at the Lab” series of courses that were introduced earlier this year, to comply with the AGBL LABS™ mission of enabling Science Labs through Quality Training.

AGBL LABS Life Sciences Career Options Course

The courses are carefully designed for high school students. The idea behind it arises from knowing how difficult it could be for a student to make a choice regarding their future career, especially when those young students do not really know what those majors actually mean, or what type of job they can have if they choose a specific major. Other courses were also designed for students with special interest in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology or Bioinformatics, giving students a chance for hands-on experiments with lab tools and equipment that would not be available in regular school laboratories.

During the course, students were explained what Life Science is and the different majors’ included in it, like Medicine, Pharmacy, Biology branches such as Cell and Molecular Biology etc. They were shown what careers they can pursue if they choose any of those majors; in all academic, applied and business directions. Students also got the chance to meet experts in the different majors presented and talk to them/ask questions on what they studied or why they choose their jobs.

The best part of the day was the practical session, where students went taken to the lab and had an introductory tour of all the state-of-the-art equipment, including the Illumina DNA sequencer. They then got the chance to conduct hands-on experiments on Cell Biology and Molecular Biology, and get a taste of what actual lab work feels like.

AGBL LABS Life Sciences Career Options Course

Overall, the course was a lot of fun and successful, and we at AGBL LABS™ could not be happier to hear the students’ positive feedback about their Day in the Lab.

We look forward to our next training course for more groups of bright students, where we can offer this course in addition to all the other courses of “A Day at the Lab”. Contact us to know more about the exciting courses we offer.

Introducing Next-Generation Preconception Screening by GenePeeks

AGBL LABS™ introduces next-generation preconception screen empowered by GenePeeks that analyzes genetic risk in male/female parings for more than 1000 genetic diseases. The screen is available to patients, healthcare providers and laboratories in the Middle East and Africa for clinical applications including premarital screening, and preimplantation genetic diagnosis for in-vitro fertilization.

The preconception screen uses Gengenepeeks-logoePeeks’ patented technology, which digitally combines the genetic information of two potential parents, simulating the complex genetic interactions that occur naturally in human reproduction. The company’s proprietary platform creates and analyzes thousands of Virtual Progeny to uncover disease risk that cannot be seen with alternative screening tools.

AGBL LABS™ at MEDLAB 2017

img_1157

January and February is the moment of the big events here in Dubai and like every year, AGBL decided to go big at MEDLAB! This doesn’t actually sounds really familiar, right? You actually have a point…indeed MEDLAB was previously part of Arab health and in 2017 for the first time the two events were split: Arab Health happened from 26th Jan to 1st Feb offering an incredible platform to network with a range of visitors and experts across the fields of healthcare including medical manufacturers, general practitioners, hospital doctors, managers, nursing staff, technical managers, laboratory managers, physiotherapists, medical assistants and distributors. MEDLAB instead occurred from 6th to 9th Feb and focused on the field of laboratory medicine and diagnostics where pathologists and laboratory professionals could share their knowledge and experiences; by providing access to education and networking opportunities, MEDLAB aimed to improve laboratory practices and patient care as well as expanding upon the laboratory medicine community.
This year we had re-designed the booth and I believe a majority of AGBLers and suppliers liked it more!! We had only one welcoming area hosting all our divisions and two meeting rooms where we could host our customers, distributors and supplier for private meetings. For the first time we created a dedicated corner for the AGBL LABS™ and it was designed to resemble a laboratory-like environment: the graphics was a picture of AGBLers at work in the lab with real dimensions, we also showcased the AGBL branded lab coats (we actually got a lot of leads for purchasing our lab coats!!!) and we had a slideshow of the lab activities. We organized a lucky draw to win an NGS course which was a big success with a total of 150 people registered: 9 from King Saudi, 9 from Levant, 102 from GCC and 29 from the rest of MEAA. Since the lab started its activity last year, we have generated 421 qualified contacts and the lucky draw actually increased the list of potential customers for AGBL LABS™ training courses by 35%!!! Eventually the winner of the lucky was a students from University of Sharjah and the award was a seat for the up-coming NGS Lite course!!
In order to make the most out of the lucky draw marketing activity, after MEDLAB I personally called the 102 registrants from GCC, out of which 83 confirmed their interest in the training courses: 25 contacts were university students and the remaining were lab technicians willing to improve their CV and lab skill by attending our Molecular Biology Technique and NGS Lite courses. Still a lot of work has to be done to close these leads but it is a good starting point!!!
The up-coming events where AGBL LABS™ team will promote the training courses will be the career fairs organized by Manipal University and by Dubai Science Park in April: we are ready to set up our AGBL LAB™ booth with branded roll ups and brochures and to promote the Molecular Biology Techniques and NGS Lite courses to new students!!! We will also start promoting the courses by going to each University and distributing fliers to students!!!
All in all we see a very bright year ahead for AGBL LABS™.
